A practical dog hiking gear checklist built around the Alpine Outfitters Hiking Bundle, with a step-by-step setup so you can hit the trail faster and safer.

Quick answer

Pack the Alpine Outfitters Hiking Bundle as your core hands-free system, then add water, waste bags, a small first-aid kit, and trail-appropriate snacks. Set up the belt and bungee leash before you leave so you can adjust fit without rushing at the trailhead.

Why a bundle beats assembling gear piece by piece

A pre-built kit removes the guesswork of matching a belt, leash, and hardware. The Alpine Outfitters Hiking Bundle combines a hands-free belt with reflective material, neoprene padding, and a bungee jogger's leash, so the main connection points are designed to work together. If you already own a favorite leash or belt, buying separate pieces may still suit you better. But for a first hands-free setup or a gift, the bundle shortens the gear list and reduces compatibility surprises.

What the bundle does not cover

No harness or collar is listed in the bundle contents. Your dog still needs a well-fitted harness or collar that the leash attaches to, and that fit should be checked before the hike. The bundle also does not include water, bowls, waste bags, or first-aid supplies. Treat the bundle as the connection system, not the complete packing list.

Step-by-step: pack and set up your dog hiking bundle

Fit the belt before you pack it: Put on the hands-free belt over the layers you will hike in, adjust it so it sits snug but allows breathing, and test the buckle. Common mistake: fitting it over a thin shirt and then wearing a jacket on the trail, which changes the fit. Recheck belt fit at the trailhead after adding or removing layers.
Attach the bungee leash to your dog's harness or collar: Clip the bungee leash to a secure attachment point on a well-fitted harness or collar, then attach the other end to the belt. Pull gently to confirm the bungee expands without pulling the harness loose. Common mistake: clipping to a collar that can slip off during a sudden lunge. Use a harness with a back attachment for hands-free hiking if your dog pulls.
Pack water and a collapsible bowl: Carry at least one bottle of water for your dog and a bowl or collapsible dish. Offer water every 20–30 minutes on warm days and after steep climbs. Common mistake: assuming a shared bottle works; many dogs will not drink from a narrow spout. Check water levels at every rest stop, not just at the start.
Add waste bags and a small first-aid kit: Pack several waste bags and a compact kit with gauze, tweezers, and antiseptic wipes. Common mistake: carrying bags in an open pocket where they can blow away or get wet. Keep waste bags in a sealed pouch attached to the belt or your pack.
Test the full setup on a short walk: Before a long hike, walk your dog for 10–15 minutes with the belt and bungee leash attached. Watch for rubbing, slack that reaches the ground, or a dog that tangles. Common mistake: skipping the test walk and discovering a loose fit a mile from the car. Adjust the bungee length so the leash stays off the ground at your normal walking pace.
Pack treats and a trail snack for yourself: Bring small, high-value treats for recalls and trail manners, plus your own snack and water. Common mistake: packing only kibble, which may not hold your dog's attention near distractions. Use a treat pouch on the belt so you can reward without stopping.
