Keep your skijor towline safe and reliable with a simple routine: inspect the rope, shockline, and quick release for wear, care for the line between runs, and know when to replace it.
Why towline upkeep matters before every run
Your skijor towline is the direct link between you and your dog, so its condition affects control and safety. A worn line can fail under load, and the shockline inside is what absorbs sudden jolts. Regular skijor towline maintenance helps you spot problems early and decide when to replace a skijor towline before a run.
The Alpine Outfitters Skijor Towline is 8 feet long, with a relaxed length of 7 feet, and uses fidded polyethylene rope with a built-in shockline. It comes as a single line for one dog or an optional Y-line for two dogs. The standard quick release is a metal snap, or you can choose the Soft Snap Quick Release System. That system is specifically designed for use with Skijor Lines only and is not intended for use with sled, cart, ATV, bike, scooter, or similar setups.
A simple inspection routine for your towline
- Check the rope along its full length: Run the line through your hands and look for fraying, cuts, or flat spots. Pay attention to areas that rub against your belt or dog harness.
- Inspect the shockline section: The built-in shockline is designed to stretch under load. Look for visible damage or unusual stiffness. If the shockline appears compromised, stop using the line.
- Examine the quick release: Whether you use the standard metal snap or the optional Soft Snap Quick Release System, check that it opens and closes smoothly and shows no cracks or deep wear.
- Verify the Y-line connection for two dogs: If you run two dogs, the Y-line configuration requires a Double Neckline (order as separate item SK005). Inspect that neckline as part of your routine.
Care tips to extend towline life
Store your towline loosely coiled, away from direct sunlight and heat, to prevent the rope from drying out or degrading. Avoid dragging the line over abrasive surfaces like pavement or ice, which can wear the outer sheath. After use in wet or snowy conditions, allow the line to air-dry completely before storing. Do not machine wash or use harsh chemicals, as these can damage the rope fibers and the shockline. For dog towline care tips, keep the line clean and free of grit that can work its way into the rope.
Towline specs that affect inspection
- Skijor Towline - 8ft: 8 feet long, 7 feet when relaxed, with a built-in shockline. The relaxed length helps you gauge stretch; if the line stays stretched out, the shockline may be worn.

Skijor Towline - 8ft - Skijor Towline - 8ft: Made with fidded polyethylene rope line. Polyethylene is durable but can wear with abrasion, so regular inspection of the rope surface is important.
- Skijor Towline - 8ft: Soft Snap Quick Release System is specifically designed for use with Skijor Lines only and is not intended for use with sled, cart, ATV, bike, scooter, etc. If you use the Soft Snap, confirm you are only using it for skijoring; using it on other equipment could be unsafe.
When to replace your skijor towline
Replace the towline if you find any deep cuts, significant fraying, or a shockline that no longer retracts or shows visible damage. Also replace the quick release if it fails to operate smoothly or shows cracks. For two-dog setups, inspect the Double Neckline (SK005) as well; if it shows wear, replace it. When in doubt, err on the side of replacement—a new line is far cheaper than a failed connection on the trail.
Choosing a replacement: options to consider
The Skijor Towline comes in Black, Blue, or Red, with either a metal quick-release (standard) or Soft Snap Quick Release, and in configurations for one dog or for one or two dogs (the two-dog option requires the Double Neckline SK005). If you run two dogs, select the Y-line configuration. Remember that the Soft Snap is only for skijor use. When ordering, specify your rope color choice. With proper skijor towline maintenance and timely replacement, you can keep your dog team running safely.
